Equipment & clothing

The Badgers will come very close to us on this workshop so in terms of lens recommendations, anywhere between a 100mm and 400mm lens is suitable. A tripod is the best way of supporting your lens in this hide. It is a 5minute walk from where we park our cars to the Badger Sett which is steep and can be muddy, so suitable footwear is needed and weather can always be unpredictable so warm dull and muted clothing is required. Please also refrain from wearing any perfume or aftershave as the badgers will be sensitive to this.

If you would like to hire a lens for this workshop I can recommend using Lenses For Hire who have a large range of zoom and prime lenses to choose from. Discount codes are available through Tom Way Photography. Please enquire for more information.

The walk to the hide is only three minutes but suitable footwear is required if the ground is wet. Dark or muted clothing is preferable although you will be well hidden in the hide. If the weather is hot through the Summer months, then it can be warm in the hide.

Details for the day:

The workshop will begin at 4pm. We will begin with a Lightroom session in which Tom will show you the best way in which to process your Badger images and what he will be looking for in each image. You will cover topics such as how to crop, lighten, darken an image as well as how to add contrast and export your files. At this stage Tom will also cover the best settings to use in the hide for the evening. Due to the nature of wild badgers being very shy, there can only be whispering in the hide and so it is best to offer as much advice and cover any questions before getting into position. Tom will give full instruction on the best shutter speeds to use aswell as ISO and aperture. We will begin our walk down to the hide at 6pm for our Badger Photography and we will be able to keep photographing until the light has faded.
