Why October?

Throughout the many years Tom has been running Kingfisher Workshops, the Summer dates have always sold first. With the longer daylight hours, traditionally fairer weather and the chance that the adults are feeding young, on paper presents fantastic photographic opportunities.

However, with the long daylight hours comes harsh light and also with the Kingfishers having young, there is a chance the female will be hidden away incubating the eggs. If you were to ask Tom when his favourite time of the year would be to photograph Kingfishers, based on the photographs taken over the years, the answer would be October.

The light at this time of year is much softer and the Kingfishers themselves are more predictable in their behaviour spending large amounts of their time on and around the pond. The thought process for this workshop and the photographs that you come away with is quality over quantity.

Equipment & clothing

A lens anywhere from 300mm on a crop sensor camera to a 500mm on a full frame camera will work well and ensure full frame images of the Kingfishers. Tom uses either a 400mm or 500mm from the hide.

The walk to the hide is only short but suitable footwear is required if the ground is wet. Dark or muted clothing is preferable although you will be well hidden in the hide. If the weather is hot through the Summer months, then it can be warm in the hide. Likewise on a cooler October day it will be important to wearing multiple layers.

The hide itself is spacious and large enough for four photographers with eight windows to shoot from. The hide is equipped with seating and a compost toilet so that you are comfortable for the duration of the workshop.

Full details regarding timings, meeting points and recommended equipment on booking.

If you would like to hire a lens for this workshop I can recommend using Lenses For Hire who have a large range of zoom and prime lenses to choose from. Discount codes are available through Tom Way Photography. Please enquire for more information.
