Safari FAQs

How do I receive more information about your safaris?

We usually avoid sharing extensive details about our trips online. We invest a lot of time and resources researching locations in the field, and we have found that publicly posting all that information makes it easy for others to replicate without doing their own exploration. If you are interested in booking a safari, we would be happy to send you a detailed PDF brochure with full information about each safari workshop.

How many people do you take on your trips?

Small group sizes are essential for several reasons. On jeep-based safaris (e.g., Mara North or Lower Zambezi), each guest is always allocated their own row of seats. This ensures ample space for photographic equipment and allows you to photograph from both sides of the jeep. Small group safaris also enable Tom to provide a more immersive learning experience, ensuring that each participant receives personalised tuition. Our maximum group size is six guests per tour; however, in such cases, there are two highly experienced photographic guides, so you will always have expert guidance.

What level of photographic experience do I need?

Each and everyone of our safaris are tailored for a wide range of experience levels. Over the years we have had professional photographers through to complete beginners. On our tours, we encourage as many questions as possible to help, so whether you need help with shutter speeds and apertures or more advanced techniques with camera focusing or processing styles, we can help make the most from your safari.

Why are photographic safaris so expensive?

The cost of photographic safaris can vary widely, so it is important to compare options carefully to understand where your investment is going. Key considerations include: How many days will you spend in the prime photographic areas? What is the group size? How many experienced photographic guides will accompany you? Are off-road permits, helicopter flights, or private internal flights included? Each of these factors influences the overall trip cost. Small group safaris to Africa’s most exceptional locations naturally command a premium, reflecting the unmatched quality, exclusivity, and photographic opportunities they provide.

Does a photographic safari have to be expensive?

Simply put — no. However, while it is possible to make a photographic safari more affordable, doing so often involves compromises. We occasionally receive inquiries about this, and although adjustments can be made, they frequently come at the expense of photographic opportunities. For photographers seeking the best access, prime locations, and a degree of exclusivity, such experiences naturally come at a higher cost.

Has The Guide Been Before?

Extensive research underpins every photographic safari we offer. Before launching a trip, we personally visit each location not just once, but multiple times to evaluate camp options, determine the optimal times of year, identify prime wildlife locations, and establish strong relationships with the guides and drivers. This level of preparation cannot be done from an office, nor can it simply be replicated by observing others. When you book a photographic safari with us, you can be confident that every detail has been meticulously planned to maximise your photographic opportunities and ensure an unforgettable experience.

What equipment should I bring on safari?

Recommending equipment for a safari can be challenging, as each photographer has a unique style and set of objectives. However, once you book, we provide a comprehensive kit list in our brochure, detailing the equipment we recommend for each workshop to help you make the most of your experience.
